The Volage Electric Roadster concept vehicle, which was first released at the Paris Motor Show by the Monaco Venturi, is equipped with the latest generation of Michelin active wheels.

The newly developed active wheels have two motors, one of which outputs torque to the wheels, and the other is used to control the active suspension system to improve comfort, handling and stability. Michelin active wheels can be used for electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles. Compared to ordinary internal combustion engine cars, transmissions, clutches, transmission shafts, universal joints, and even anti-roll bars are no longer required. A braking device is also provided between the two motors, which means that the power, the braking and the suspension are all integrated and the structure is quite compact. Since the torque of the motor is easy to control, if four Michelin active wheels are equipped, it becomes a four-wheel-drive system, and the torque of any wheel can be independently adjusted by the computer. Electronically controlled differential locks and body stability control for traditional cars can be implemented with just a few more sensors and more sophisticated programs for the new power solutions offered by Michelin. It is even possible to create a superior handling experience by adjusting the different torque outputs of the left and right wheels.

The integrated active control suspension automatically adjusts the amount of damping and damping. The response speed is as fast as three-thousandths of a second and ten times faster than blinking. It can automatically control the body posture, reduce roll and pitch, so as to achieve good comfort. Active wheels also have one of the biggest advantages, providing better passive safety than traditional cars. Because the traditional automobile needs to place the engine and gearbox on the front, the power system can easily cause fatal injury when crashed. When the engine and gearbox are omitted, the front buffer will become efficient and sufficient.

Although Michelin's active wheel technology is no longer new, this time it has not stayed in the conception or concept stage, and it is within easy reach of commercial production. The Venturi Volage concept car, which was released at the Paris Motor Show recently, is equipped with four Michelin active wheels and is expected to reach volume production in 2012. However, it is still unknown whether the final production version can be equipped with this technology.
